A 1,000-word speech takes about 7 minutes 40 seconds at a typical live-speaking pace of 130 words per minute. A formal delivery with pauses stretches it past nine minutes; a relaxed conversational pace brings it under seven. Speeches run slower than videos because a live room needs breathing space, so the paces in the table below are deliberately lower than the ones used for video scripts.

Which pace applies to you

• Formal, 100–120 wpm. Eulogies, ceremonial addresses, keynotes with deliberate pauses, anything read at a lectern to a large room.
• Typical, 125–135 wpm. Most talks, toasts, presentations, and lessons. If you are unsure, plan at 130.
• Conversational, 140–160 wpm. Workshop-style talks, panel remarks, and confident speakers with a small audience.

Add time for everything that is not words

Word count measures continuous speech. A real speech also contains laughter, applause, a pause while a slide changes, a sip of water, and the silence you leave after the important line. Together they take ten to twenty percent of a slot. If the time limit is strict, write to 85 percent of the table's figure: a 1,000-word speech in a ten-minute slot is comfortable, in an eight-minute slot it is tight, and in a seven-minute slot it needs cutting.
